California

This region, viewed from an orbit near 2000 km, shows nearly all of California and a portion of Nevada. The length of the western coast of North America is a land of earthquakes and volcanoes resulting from the collision of huge techtonic plates. The Pacific Plate is sliding slowing under the North American Plate, causing intense heating at the plate boundaries as the Pacific Plate is forced into the Earth's mantle. Serious earthquakes have struck Los Angeles and San Francisco in the last 20 years causing substantial damage.
